If you had to pick one season to visit Turkey, a strong case can be made for autumn. The fierce summer heat fades, the Aegean and Mediterranean seas stay warm into October, the great ancient sites become bearable to walk, and the crowds thin dramatically. Here's where to go, region by region.
The Aegean Coast and Ephesus
This is autumn's sweet spot. The ancient city of Ephesus is punishing under the August sun but glorious in September and October — mild, golden, and far less crowded. In fact, autumn is one of the best times to visit Ephesus. The coast around Kuşadası and Çeşme still has swimmable sea well into October.
Istanbul
Turkey's great city is at its most comfortable in autumn — roughly 17–22°C in October, with golden light over the Bosphorus and the parks turning amber. It's ideal for the long days of walking the city rewards. See Istanbul in autumn for the full picture.
Cappadocia
The otherworldly valleys of Cappadocia are at their best in autumn: cooler days for hiking, crisp clear mornings for the famous hot-air balloon flights, and the vineyards turning gold. Summer can be hot and winter cold, so September–November hits the balance. Book balloon flights ahead — they're weather-dependent and popular.
The Mediterranean Coast
The "Turquoise Coast" around Antalya, Kaş, and Fethiye holds onto summer longest. Sea temperatures stay warm through October, and the heat is comfortable rather than overwhelming — perfect for combining ancient ruins (Myra, Patara) with beach time.
The Black Sea and the North
For actual autumn foliage, head to the forested hills and plateaus of the Black Sea region, where the colours turn and the highland villages are at their most atmospheric before winter.
Practical Tips for Autumn in Turkey
Weather varies by region. The coast stays warm while Istanbul, Cappadocia, and the interior cool noticeably — pack layers and a light rain jacket.
It's harvest season. Expect pomegranates, chestnuts, fresh olive oil, and grape harvest festivals, especially in the Aegean.
Book around the shoulder season. Prices drop after summer, but popular spots (Cappadocia balloons, Istanbul hotels around Republic Day on 29 October) can still fill up.
